It is with sadness that we have to report that John Nelson Rowe III, the last surviving charter member of the SPMC, passed away on March 4, 2023. He was inducted into the SPMC Hall of Fame with the 2022 class. He was also the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Numismatics Guild in 2009. In 2003, Rowe and his brother-in-law B. B. Barr donated their extensive collection of Texas memorabilia to the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University. The Rowe-Barr Collection is considered to be the best and most extensive collection of Texas banknotes, currency, bonds, maps and books from the early yesrs of the Republic of Texas through the National Bank Era.
Always a delightful and friendly fixture at many shows and a true gentleman, John Rowe will be greatly missed by the collecting community.
